The third Smoky Mountain Throwdown saw an influx of Asheville competitors vying for the doubles title at Fontana Village Disc Golf Course. The weather was perfect with bluebird skies, a high around 70 and light winds. Beers available were the Abita Jockamo IPA and the Heinzelmannchen Gnutty Gnome, a local brown ale from Sylva. Many a good shot was made on this day, including improbable birdies on hole 5, 10, 11, and 16 from various cards. Ultimately, the showdown evolved into a one card race, where the teams of Ryan Pickens/Eric Marx and Tim McGhee/Oren Giladi were deadlocked at a course record 46 after 18 holes.
A sudden death playoff started on hole 16, and the winner was quickly determined. Ryan/Eric parred 16 while Tim/Oren missed a 30' downhill putt to bogey the hole. Tim McGhee had previously set the course record of 46 in the second Throwdown with another partner, and he remains a doubles course record holder at Fontana, for now. Congratulations to the winners, and thanks go out to all of the teams from Asheville, Johnson City, TN , Waynesville, Cullowhee/Sylva, and Fontana for making this the largest turnout for a Throwdown yet. Held November 1, 2009 The Smoky Mountain Throwdown I was a "bring your own partner" doubles tournament featuring 3 local teams, and 3 teams from Knoxville for the first annual event. A beautiful sunny, cloudless day with temperatures around 60 and a slight to moderate breeze made for nearly ideal conditions for the single round of disc golf action. At the conclusion of 18 holes, Team Sharp and Team AJ were tied at 48 and headed out for a sudden death playoff starting on Hole 16. After tying on 16, the Father/Son duo of Team Sharp carded a birdie to Team AJ's par to become the Showdown's first Champions. They won 2 discs and a champion's mug apiece. 2nd place took home a travel mug and disc apiece.
When this tournament was conceived, it was envisioned to be a regional showdown for doubles teams from Western NC, East Tennessee, and North Georgia. While the turnout for the first event was lower than desired, the locals here will continue to get the word out about this gem of a course tucked away in the southern Smoky Mountains. Special thanks to those who participated, and please spread the word to anyone interested. While the boys from Knoxville may have bested the Fontana locals this time around, we look forward to playing them again up in Knoxville for some casual play, and again back down here for the next Throwdown. Until then, may your throws be accurate and long ......

The Smoky Mountain Throwdown II doubles tournament was held Sunday December 6, 2009 at 1 pm under partly sunny skies, slight breeze, and temps in the low 40"s. Tim McGee and Noa Sparks (Team Nantahala) had 8 birdies and no bogeys to shoot a 46, winning the tournament and setting a new doubles course record. Three teams were tied for second place with a score of 50. Tim and Noa got Fontana Travel mugs and 2 discs apiece for their tremendous team effort. Each member of the second place teams selected one disc for their efforts.
Also, a special thanks goes out to 4 teams Waynesville DG Club and Western Carolina University DG Club brought to Fontana. Along with the 4 local teams from the Fontana area, it made for a solid showing that we hope will continue to grow for our next Throwdown tenatively scheduled for April 11, 2010. Visit our links page for more information on the regional disc golf clubs near Fontana Dam. Until then, here's to another Winter disc golf season ...... Happy Holidays!
